Antoine and His Miyazaki-Inspired Tattoo

Yesterday we featured a tattoo on Paul-Emil, done by the artist Fusay at Addiction Tattoo in Strasbourg, France. Paul-Emil and his friends were visiting New York City and Antoine, another in the group, had work by Fusay as well:

Antoine explained this dotwork tattoo:
"This is a symbol ... from my favorite movie, and I just gave [Fusay] the symbol told him, 'you are free to do something you like with that and he came to me with that and I loved it ...[Fusay] is a specialist of dotwork."

The movie in question is Howl's Moving Castle, one of the masterworks of the Japanese animation director Hayao Myazaki.

Thanks to Antoine for sharing this cool tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Max and the 5th Element

Last month I met Max, when he was walking down Broad Street in Lower Manhattan.

I asked him about this interesting tattoo:

He told me that this, one of his nine tattoos, is an homage to the 1997 Luc Besson film The Fifth Element. "I love that movie," he explained, "It's one of my favorites."

Max credited Chase (Instagram here) at Til Death in Denver with the work.

As a fan of the film myself, I appreciated the tattoo, as well.

Thanks to Max for sharing his cool tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Jackie's Van Helsing Tattoo (NYC Tattoo Convention)

I met Jackie outside of the Da Vinci Tattoo booth at the New York City Tattoo Convention earlier this month and she shared this awesome work on her arm:

Jackie credited this work to an artist from China named Po Po, who did the work at the Saint James location of Tattoo Lou's on Long Island, New York.

Jackie explained that the work is inspired from the film Van Helsing.

Thanks to Jackie for sharing her work with us here on Tattoosday!

Three Tattoos, Three Artists, Courtesy of Alice from New Zealand

I knew Friday was going to be a great day when I got off the subway at Whitehall Street and waiting at the corner was a woman with tattoos named Alice.

Alice is part of our ongoing international theme, as she hails from New Zealand. She was kind enough to share several of her tattoos with us, starting with this portrait of Christoper Plummer from The Sound of Music:

Alice credited Michele McLaughlin at Jackson Street Tattoo in Wellington, New Zealand. She got this because The Sound of Music was her favorite childhood movie.

You may notice a tortoise shell in the lower corner of the photo, which is part of this tattoo just below:

No story there, just that she liked the idea of a sea tortoise. This was done by an artist with the moniker Nursey, from Dr. Morse INC Tattoo, also in Wellington.

Finally, I spotted a feline on Alice's left thigh. I just had to ask:

We're seeing a lot of memorial cat portraits these days. This one is in memory of Alice's tabby Vodie, who was a rescue cat. Kev from Tattoo City in Wellington was the artist who inked this lovely work.

It was great meeting someone from New Zealand, to be sure. I don't recall ever having featured work from that country before, and to find a contributor who had work from three talented artists was quite a bonus for me.

Thanks to Alice for visiting New York City and being so kind as to share her work with us here at Tattoosday!

Jesper's Tattoo is Totally Kickin'

Yesterday I met Jesper outside of Federal Hall at the corner of Wall and Broad Streets in Lower Manhattan. He was visiting from Denmark and was kind enough to share this tattoo on the side of his calf:

Yes, folks, that is a Kung Fu Panda tattoo.

He got this in a shop in Phuket, Thailand. He couldn't remember the name of the shop, but knew that one of the owners had made an appearance on Miami Ink many years ago.

Jesper explained that he had been training in Muay Thai and when he and his sister were travelling together in Phuket, she insisted that they get tattoos. He found the image on Google and it he decided to go with it..

He says the tattoo is especially popular with little kids, who are always pointing at it and saying, "Mom, look at the guy with the tattoo!"

Thanks to Jesper for sharing his awesome Kung Fu Panda tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Edward Scissorhands (at the NYC Urban Tattoo Convention)

Simple and to the point. I met Alexandria at the NYC Urban Tattoo Convention last Saturday. She shared this tattoo on her left thigh:

She credited this to an artists named Milton somewhere in SoHo. She got it because she loves Johnny Depp and his character Edward Scissorhands.

Thanks to Alexandria for sharing this awesome tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

The Return of Saturday Links

It has been a while since we posted about the tattoo-related items we browsed on the web over the last week, so here's a few to whet your weekend appetite.

One of those not-so-often-discussed benefits for getting tattooed?

It's easier for the authorities to identify your body, like this John Doe whose ink helped the powers-that-be identify him. Full story here.
The Department of the Medical Examiner (Hawaii) released a photo of an eagle or phoenix tattoo found on the body of a man recovered from the ocean off Sand Island Thursday morning. (Courtesy Department of the Medical Examiner)

On the flip side, if you get a unicorn tattooed on your butt, you might still be regretting it thirty+ years later, as this writer recounts in the New York Times here. Thanks to Marisa at Needles and Sins for pointing that gem out to me. There's no photo, but if you're jonesing for one, it might look like this:

Or perhaps not, but you can see more like that one on Holy Taco's gallery of 30 Awesomely Bad Unicorn Tattoos.

Then again, Buzzfeed always rocks out with their awesome lists, like this one I saw late Friday: "47 Cringeworthy Tattoos Being Regretted As We Speak" here.

The big news this week in New York was Rapid Realty's promise to give significant raises to any employee who got their logo tattooed on them.

Read about the deal here (among others).

And my favorite link of the week came from those mammoth sources of all thing tattoo, Inked Magazine.

Among other goodies, they feature "The Best Tattoos in Movies Ever" in three parts. One of my favorites:

Gotta love those Blues Brothers!

That should whet your appetites for the weekend!
